Chapter Twenty-nine

Elmer closed the door and leaned back against it. He stared at the empty hallway. The house was quiet. He was alone. He kept thinking she would come down the steps or walk in from the kitchen. But she wasn’t going to appear. After all this time, she was still there somewhere. Only she wasn’t. She never would be. He had killed her. Did she know why? Did she die thinking he hated her?

He had become an old man without her. He put his hands to his face and cried. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I took your life away from you.” He played the scene over and over. Goodbye, Elmer. There were tears in her eyes. “Oh, God, bring her back.” She looked at me as if she adored me.

He stumbled out to the breakfast nook where they used to eat together. He sat and leaned forward on the table. He didn’t deserve her. He didn’t deserve to forget. He looked around in the kitchen. She had been so loving. She deserved better.

He was a different person. His life was gone, too. Now, he just went through the paces. He lived out of cans or frozen food or ordered out. Alone, forever alone. He was getting thin, and being tall accentuated it. If she did somehow appear, she might not recognize him. But she would never change. He would never forget her—and those last moments.
